Nespelem is the headquarters of the Confederate Tribes of Colville. Established in 1872, the reservation encompasses more than 1.4 million acres and includes members of the Colville, Entiat/Chelan, Lake, Methow, Moses Columbia, Nespelem, Nez Perce, Okanogan, Palouse, Sanpoil, Senijextee, Skitwish and Wenatchee tribes.

Chief Joseph, legendary leader of the Nez Perce, is buried on a hillside northeast of town. Visitors to the area may drive within the reservation; picnicking, camping, hunting, and rock and plant collecting are prohibited. Other nearby attractions include the Nespelem River, Spray Falls and Multnomah Falls.
