Spring has been very busy at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery as the Department of Fish & Wildlife Staff (DFW) get ready to release the Chinook smolt into Issaquah Creek. The best guess currently is Wednesday, May 8, but a number of factors can change that.
FISH has had a busy Spring hiring a team! Taylor McAlister joined FISH in March as the education coordinator & has been diligently working on refreshing the education curriculum for presentations, tours and summer science camps, while attending school smolt releases & science fairs. In April, FISH hired Natasha Kacoroski as the outreach/volunteer coordinator. Natasha brings her many talents and enthusiasm to FISH and one of her first projects will be setting up the underwater salmon cam in anticipation of the smolt release. Welcome Taylor & Natasha!
Located 15 miles east of Seattle along the I90 corridor, the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery is FREE and open to the general public from dawn until dusk. Situated in the heart of Downtown Issaquah, the 88 year old hatchery is an outdoor education center featuring viewing windows and bridges, salmon and trout raceways, an aquarium, interactive 37 exhibits and displays, a native plant garden and a fish ladder. Currently over 1,000,000 juvenile Chinook can be viewed from the windows! Plan your trip!
